How Do I Become a Dog Trainer?


A love for dogs is an important aspect when it comes to considering a career with dogs. Dog walking, dog daycare, groomer, vet tech, veterinarian, the list is lengthy, offering an abundance of interesting options.


The question, How do I become a dog trainer? is the question I very much enjoy discussing with people.


Your decision to become a dog trainer not only allows you to learn about training a dog or dogs. This can be a stepping stone to an abundance of opportunity.


The first step to researching to become a dog trainer starts with education. The majority of trainers use treats. For myself I don’t place these people into a true category as a dog trainer. A walking vending machine or treat dealer. I have many reasons why I dislike it. As a dog trainer, this is something I want potential new dog trainers to know and hear earlier rather than later.


Treat training creates a plethora of issues and minimizes a dog’s true ability.


Since studying dogs, I have looked closely at the culture of dogs The culture of dogs is interesting They have a language, rules, and communication methods which are important and held at a high value. Understanding DOG is more than a sit, stay or any other request.

Examining personality, needs, wants, a call for help, and fulfillment being a part of a unit. These are pieces of dog training I discuss and delve into.


I ask potential students do they want to make an honest, healthy difference for the dog and also the dog and owner. The dog will be in a person’s life for a fraction of the time, what is the positive impact you want to bring to the table?


When a person decides to Learn to be a dog trainer by enrolling as a CTE (Certified Dog Trainer Educator) You embark on an intense 6-week journey to understand how dogs learn. The science attached to how dogs learn explores the power created when a dog is appreciated and respected. Imagine receiving a distress call from an owner who has seen 4 or more dog trainers, all of whom use treats, all of which failed the dog and owner. This is not uncommon. You now are the last chance for the dog, you become a crucial link in keeping hope alive. This is what many CTE's experience during their career.
